So, we’ve completed our first two days of running with the Fords now and all in all, I’m really pleased with how it went.
The cars ran faultlessly for the whole two days. Obviously when you take delivery of cars from another team, you rip them apart and put them back together again, but even then, you can never be sure that there won’t be some little niggling problems. We’ve had none of that with the Fords.
There was water everywhere on the first of the two days at Brands Hatch and if anything’s going to go wrong with the cars, that’s when it will be. We had no gremlins at all though, which is a really good sign.
We started off by setting up the cars, checking data and making sure the systems were all running correctly. The first day was pretty wet, but we were able to get some dry running on the second day. We had the stopwatch out and I was pleasantly surprised with our pace.
Liam’s been the biggest surprise so far I think. He had a couple of really solid, faultless days. Clearly we know he can drive – he struggled a little bit with the Porsches last year. He had one race in ’09 and then he was straight into Pro-Am1, which is no easy task. He stuck at it, but it wasn’t really for him.
He’s very much at home in a front-wheel-drive car. He’s showing some very good signs. He said it’s the best race car he’s ever driven and he ended the two days just four-tenths slower than Mat. I think it’s safe to say that Liam Griffin is going to surprise a few people this year.
As for Mat, well, keeping him in the team was hugely important for us this year. We know what we’re getting with Mat and he’s already getting to grips with the new car. He will be quick this year, there’s no doubt about it.
Overall, it was a really good first outing for us. We’ve got some work to do to get fully up to speed with the cars, but it’s great to be out on track so early. We’ve got at least three or four more days of testing scheduled – we’re definitely going to Snetterton and Oulton Park – so there’s plenty of time for us to get things ready before the start of the season. It’s early days, but I’m smiling at the moment!
