Leading at Brands Hatch

Leading at Brands Hatch

Back to Brands Hatch again then! The championship started at Brands and it’s going to end at Brands. It’s a local track for me and it has generally been good to me at the end of recent seasons, so I would really like to go out on a high again this year.

I’d like to think we can make it into the top five in qualifying, finish there or thereabouts in race one and then go on to get a podium or a win in race two or three. What I don’t want to do is end up in a situation where I’m compromised because I end up getting involved with Colin or Fabrizio. I hope I can qualify towards the front and let all that happen behind me.

Finally back on the podium

Silverware at Silverstone!

Silverware at Silverstone!

I’m very pleased to have come away from the weekend with a podium for Airwaves BMW. We seem to have only won or not been on the podium this year, so to get a second is good for the team after the bad two meetings we’ve had previously.

To be honest, I’m a little bit disappointed with the weekend as a whole. We showed a lot of pace yesterday and we were P2 in qualifying but we didn’t quite unlock the potential of the car in race one. P6 was good but I think we could have done better.

The BM has a lot of pace but it’s a car that’s so hard to find the ultimate balance and pace. We either find it or we don’t. At Snetterton we didn’t really have it. Knockhill was good but we had all the contact and we were unable to show it. Today, we had mixed weather conditions – we were expecting a nice sunny day so when we went out this morning, we thought we had the car set up from qualifying but it got remarkably cold and we had no grip.

Knockhill - always dramatic

Knockhill - always dramatic

It’s been a while since my last update and it’s been pretty eventful during that time. We went to Snetterton after the long summer break and now we’re at Knockhill in Scotland.

Snetterton didn’t quite go to plan. We struggled on Saturday and the problem with that is that it puts you on the back foot for race day. I made a good start to the first race getting up to 10th from 14th, but I got spun around and the damage from that put me out of the race. That meant I started race two from the back.

Winning at Donington Park

Winning at Donington Park

What a weekend! A second win and sitting joint third in the championship with Giovanardi. And what’s more, Airwaves BMW is top of the Indy teams’ standings.

I didn’t think Donington Park was going to be a BMW circuit to be quite honest, but we developed the car over the weekend and it turned into a bit of a killer really. We ended up having a stonking weekend.

Doing it the hard way

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

I’m pretty pleased with sixth place in qualifying, even if I had to do it twice! I was sixth when I lost my times for failing the ride height check and I then went back out again and got back up to seventh, which became sixth when Giovanardi was thrown out.
