Rockingham is the newest track on the BTCC calendar. Having only hosted racing for the past two
years, the BTCC makes its first visit to the track in 2003.
Rockingham is perhaps most famous as the only oval racing track in the UK having hosted the American Champ Cars and
the new ASCAR series on the oval track. The BTCC however will be racing on the infield road course which only uses part of
the full oval track.
Regular visitors to other track around the country will first be struck about the newness of
everything at the track. The Rockingham building, which runs the whole of the main straight of the track
contains extensive grandstand seating. Seats in this grandstand provide views of the whole of the track, contrary to
popular belief, the cars while out on the infield sections of the circuit appear no further away than
at any other circuit in the UK, e.g. Donington or Oulton Park.
As you would expect from a newly constructed track, the facilities are second to none. However for those who prefer to bring
their own chairs etc. to a track, there is only a limited amount of grass area on which to stand or sit, and this is only
at a low level on the main straight. To get a view of the main track, you need to get up a hight in the Rockingham building, or
one of the grandstands. The advantage of sitting in the Rockingham building is that it is covered, a big
plus considering the British summer weather!
The pits and paddock are smaller than you might expect at first, in order to accomodate the infield road course, the only way to
get to the paddock is to go down several flights of stairs from the main building and walk along
a tunnel underneath the main straight. There is also a vehicle tunnel which travels underneath the final turn
of the oval track.
At the ASCAR races in 2002, and presumably at the BTCC, there was the interesting feature that you can stand on the top of
the pit garages, and watch the racing from there. This will surely give a good perspective on the racing
especially as there are pit stops in both the touring car races this year.
Car parking at the track is extensive. I personally did not experience any traffic problems on leaving the circuit
the last I visited, however the roads leading to the track are quite some miles from any motorway so you can expect
a delay upon leaving the track.
Overall, this is an oval track and compared with other tracks in the UK, has more of a stadium atmosphere
fans there are sure to enjoy a good days racing.
