Familiar BTCC faces from down the years Familiar BTCC faces from down the years

Tue 19th March 2013 As we prepare for the media launch of the 2013 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park on Thursday, we took the opportunity for a look back at the 'class' photos from a few previous years.

By Matt Lamprell

Check out the line-ups that graced the grid at the start of these past BTCC seasons can you put names to all of the faces? How many drivers can you spot who didn't actually go on to race?

It has become something of a pre-season ritual the class photo ahead of the new BTCC season. Before what looks like being one of the biggest photos of recent years, we dug into our archives to look at some of the past pictures. There are some familiar faces among them and some who made just the briefest of appearances...

BTCC 2012

No real surprises here it was only 12 months ago, after all at Silverstone. Who takes the best sunglasses award though?

BTCC 2011

Another sunny day at Silverstone in late March. Jason Plato takes centre-stage in this one. What's Gordon Shedden looking at?

BTCC 2010

As we go back a bit, some of the faces get tougher to recognise bonus points if you can name the whole back row here at Brands Hatch!

BTCC 2009

A bit low on numbers for the 2009 shot at Rockingham. No Jason Plato here, but he was on the grid for the first race. If it had been taken later in the year, this photo may also have included James Thompson and Johnny Herbert. Which driver in this photo only completed one round for the team whose overalls he's wearing, but came back in a different car later in the year?

BTCC 2008

An impressive line-up for the 2008 class photo at Brands Hatch. Spot the father and son combo? There's also a driver in the back row who didn't make it out to race indeed, his team's cars never quite made it onto the track. How many BTCC champions (or future champions at this point) are sat beside each other in the front row?

BTCC 2007

Sun in their eyes at Rockingham in 2007. Name the last female driver to grace the grid, in the back row of this one. Some haircuts of note here, too. No, not Tom Chilton no more than any other year, anyway but take a look at Tom Onslow-Cole and Gordon Shedden!

BTCC 2006

A compact group at Brands Hatch in 2006. There were some overalls in this photo that went in the bin before the first race can you spot which ones and why? Which two drivers shared a car this season? What was the 'alternative' fuel on the grid this year?

BTCC 2005 Ok, we failed here we're sorry. We're missing the 2005 class photo from our archive. Please drop us a line if you've got one!

BTCC 2004

A rare back-row spot for Jason Plato in the 2004 image from Donington Park. Can you name the two Proton drivers at the front? Who's in the picture but was out of the frame by the time the first race of the year came around? And can you name all of the drivers who lined up for Team Sureterm during the 2004 season?

BTCC 2003

The late David Leslie featured in the 2003 image. Look out for the three MG drivers looking on from the back in this one. How many drivers from this image will be on the grid in 2013?

BTCC 2002 - No single image for 2002, but we've got three:

It's easy to tell these were taken before the season started it's all very jovial. It wouldn't have stayed like that for long once the racing started. How many drivers only competed in the BTCC for this one season?

BTCC 2001 This was our first full year covering the BTCC, so we should have a 2001 class shot, but just like 2005, it's gone AWOL. Believe it or not, most of our images were printed from film and then scanned for online back in 2001! If you've got a 2001 group image, please let us know!

That's as far back as we've managed to go. Hopefully there are a few faces you recognise, but no doubt a fair few that are unfamiliar!

We'll have the BTCC's 'class of 2013' photo for you from Donington on Thursday please be sure to join us for all the news direct from the track!
