Peugeot looks set to drop the 406 Coupe next year and instead race the new 307 model.
Vic Lee Racing have already revealed that they are to build customer versions of the 307 for racing in the BTC-Production class and could use this as a basis to enter the car in the premier BTC-Touring category. Vic Lee said "Because the bodyshell rules are very similar, it will be easy to adapt the Super Production car to the BTCC touring rules. It's just a matter of different bodywork and internals."
Peugeot did originally intend to use the 307 for the 2001 campaign however the car was not officially launched in the UK until part way through the season. The Peugeot 406 Coupe has not been able to break the strangehold of the Vauxhall Astras, which have won every race this year. The best showing to date being Steve Soper leading the race at Outlon Park before a mechanical failure. At the start of the 2001 season Peugeot stated that they intended to continue with the 406 Coupe into the 2002 season, however they have now changed their position.
