18 year old Tom Boardman has been confirmed as the first of the drivers for new Production class team Edenbridge Racing, the second driver is likely to be announced soon.
They plan to race a pair of BMW 320i's, the cars raced last year in the European Touring Car Championship.
Boardman completed a successful test for the team last weekend at the Snetterton circuit in Norfolk, which plays host to the BTCC on 27th and 28th of July this year.
Last season was Boardmans first year in the BTCC and at 17 years old was the youngest ever driver to compete in the British series and will remain so until Tom Chilton takes to the track at the first round at Brands Hatch in Easter.
Team Boss Peter Briggs is more concerned with driver quality and potential than age. As Peter remarked, "Last year 19 year old Tom Ferrier drove for us and he had a good season. One of our most successful drivers ever was Oliver Gavin who, in 1993, also started with Edenbridge at the age of 19. Two years later we won the British F3 Championship with Oliver behind the wheel. Quality and willingness to learn is what counts."
After the Snetterton trial Peter’s opinion was that "Tom did really well this weekend and we are pleased to have him on board. As he gets used to the car and the team gets attuned to him, I believe that we will see Tom show his class. So, for us, the 2002 season began here."
