Team B&Q will compete once again in the Production class of the British Touring Car Championship in 2002 following their debut in the series last year.
However, in a break with tradition, team boss John B&Q plans to revert back to his 'maiden' name of John Batchelor for the campaign. "In the past I have adopted the names of my sponsors, but it has become very confusing and I now have bank accounts and credit cards in all manner of different names. As well as keeping the bank manager happy, I hope that this change will ensure that my wife and kids will not be given such a hard time over my name!" Whilst this move may disappoint some, he hasn't ruled out a further change of name in the future.
The team will swap their aging and uncompetitive Honda Integra Type-Rs for a brace of more up to date Honda Accords in a bid to shake off the reliability woes that dogged them throughout the latter part of their 2001 campaign. John explained that the Honda Integras had never been the team's first choice of equipment, "because the deal with B&Q came at such a late stage we were forced to feed on everyone elses scraps. We needed two cars that were fairly similar to each other and the Integras were pretty much the only cars available, so we took them. We knew that we would face an uphill battle due to their age, but we hoped that the relative simplicity of the car would fall in our favour."
Whilst the team suffered with mechanical gremlins last season, hopes are running high within the team for the new season. "We now have two proven cars for the forthcoming campaign. The Accord narrowly missed out on winning the championship in a showdown at the last round at Brands Hatch. Everyone within the team is looking forward to going out there and giving it our best shot in some competitive machinery."
The official entry list, released by the series organisers today, shows two cars entered by the team, the driver of the second car remains as TBA. "I cannot confirm who will be driving our second car at this moment in time, but I am very pleased to have someone of their calibre on board", says Batchelor, who states that he hopes to make an announcement on their identity in the next 7-10 days.
Also shown as TBA on the entry list is the team's official name. This is because John is in advanced stages of negotiation to rescue the struggling third-division football club, York City. If his ambitious plans come to fruition he plans to relocate the football club and the race team to a brand new stadium in the city of York, and enter the cars under the umbrella of 'York City Racing'
