TOCA's rules regarding the number of engines that each BTCC driver is allowed to use over the course of the season claimed more victims at Croft. Warren Hughes, Phil Bennett, Paul O'Neill and Rob Collard were all docked 5 points from their Drivers Championship tallies for changing their engine over the Croft weekend. For Hughes, O'Neill and Collard, it was their 5th engine of the season, whilst for Bennett, it was his sixth - he also lost points at Mondello Park.

The regulations state "Each driver is permitted a maximum of four sealed engines during the course of the championship." For each subsequent change of engine, the driver, team and manufacturer (where applicable) is liable to be deducted 5 championship points.

The new teams to the championship for 2002, Team PSP and Honda Racing each have one 'free' engine to allocate to one of their drivers, essentially allowing one of their drivers to use five engines without being penalised. Honda took up this option with Andy Priaulx's fifth engine at the weekend at Croft, whilst Team PSP are yet to use theirs.

The aim of the ruling is to keep costs down for the teams by preventing them from developing engines which may be quicker, but less likely to last a long time. The points being deducted are likely to play a major role in deciding the outcome of the champiosnhip over the remainder of the season.
