Collard and Neal Snr had not spoken since a controversial incident at Brands Hatch in early 2006 that saw Matt Neal end up in the gravel trap at Paddock Hill Bend – after contact with Collard.
“Steve Neal came and spoke to me for the first time in three years”, said Collard in the latest instalment of his blog on BTCCPages.com. “[Steve Neal] congratulated me after qualifying. I hope we continue a decent relationship. I’ve never really had a problem with Matt. We’ve had our problems in the past, but me and Matt have never really had a cross word and I hope this year we don’t end up that way. The same with Giovanardi really.”
Matt Neal was driving for his father’s Team Dynamics setup in 2006, but it’s a VX Racing Vauxhall Vectra that he will be launching from pole position today, with Collard directly behind him. Reigning champion Fabrizio Giovanardi lines up alongside Neal on the front row, while Collard is joined by Colin Turkington. The two rear-wheel drive BMWs will be quick away from the line, but it’s going to be tough to find a way past what are sure to be very wide Vectras.
