Clio Cup runner-up Alex MacDowall recently tested with a British Touring Car Championship team for the second time in as many months when he joined the RML squad for a two-day outing at Jerez, Spain.

Alex MacDowall tests RML Chevrolet

MacDowall took to the the wheel of Jason Plato’s race winning Super-2000 specification Chevrolet Lacetti just weeks after driving a Motorbase Performance BMW 320si E90 at Brands Hatch as the team accompanied Chevrolet's WTCC Cruze development test.

Despite inclement weather conditions, the 18-year old from Carlisle immediately acclimatised himself to the front-wheel drive Lacetti on the first day, quickly building in confidence and setting consistently quick lap times. The schedule for day two was to work on set up changes and understanding the effects, and as the heavy rain came in, Alex was back out on track working on overall pace.

Alex enthused: “I thoroughly enjoyed our two days at Jerez and working with everyone at RML was an absolute pleasure.

“The Lacetti itself is very quick, handles well through the corners and gives you a lot of confidence to push hard. Having now tested a rear-wheel drive BMW and the front-wheel drive Lacetti, we have plenty of food for thought for next year. “In the meantime we’re continuing to work as hard as possible to try and attract more sponsors to our 2010 BTCC bid. I can’t thank RML enough for this fantastic opportunity to test with the team”.

Speaking at the test, RML's BTCC Chief Mechanic, Rod Underwood summarised: "Alex obviously has a natural talent for driving Touring cars. He was very professional in his approach to the test and worked well with his engineer and the team. The first test with a new team can be incredibly daunting, especially with the weather we've had here, but Alex has tackled everything with impressive confidence, even in the trickiest of conditions. He's very quick in the car and definitely has a bright future in the BTCC, and at only 18, I think he'd be a welcome addition. It's great to see new, quick racers coming into the series and just proves how popular and competitive the BTCC continues to be."

Chevrolet will once again contest the FIA WTCC in 2010, but like MacDowall, is yet to confirm plans to race in the BTCC.
