Starting from pole position, Plato led the rear-wheel drive BMW of Mat Jackson into Riches for the first time, with the Team Aon Fords of Tom Chilton in third.
Further down the order, a collision between James Nash and Tom Boardman brought the safety car out at the end of the first lap. Boardman’s SEAT was left facing the wrong way and was collected by both Sunshine.co.uk Hondas. Paul O’Neill was left stationary alongside Boardman, while John George hobbled back to the pitlane on three wheels.
Five laps behind the safety car followed, before the race resumed on lap seven. Plato looked strong at the front and would have been pleased to see Jackson forced to defend his second place against the advances of Chilton.
Jackson was helpless against the pace of the Fords along the pit straight on lap eight – Chilton went left while Onslow-Cole went right and the Airwaves BMW driver lost two places. His descent through the order continued later when he slid wide at Sear and allowed teammate Steven Kane through into fourth.
Behind the leaders, Rob Collard, Matt Neal and Andrew Jordan enjoyed a healthy battle over the closing stages of the race. In the end, Jordan claimed sixth spot.
At the end of the race, Jason Plato led across the line by almost three seconds, with Chilton and Onslow-Cole surrounding him on the podium for Team Aon. Steven Kane and Mat Jackson finished fourth and fifth respectively, ahead of Jordan, Collard, Shedden, Neal and Nash.
Jason Plato said: “I’ve got a great race car under me. The team has really understood what our little problems were and we’re hooked up now with a fantastic car that doesn’t deteriorate during the race. We’re going to improve it a bit more and see what we can do in race three.”
