MacDowall set a best time of 53.001, which is a new qualifying lap record, to knock Shedden off the top of the timesheets with just five minutes of the session remaining.
Jason Plato set the early pace, before Paul O’Neill continued his excellent display form to go top. MacDowall was next to head the times, only for Shedden to out in his quickest lap of the day.
There was a break in the session when Andy Neate crashed into the tyres on the outside of Seat Curve. The red flags came out for the WSR BMW to be recovered.
Once the session resumed, Shedden appeared to have done enough to take pole, but MacDowall had more to offer. The 19-year-old managed to put together a stunning lap to take his second pole position of the season.
Shedden tried hard to retake the spot, returning to the pits after his final run with tyre-damage to the front-left corner of his Honda Civic. However, the Scot’s efforts were in vain as MacDowall held on.
MacDowall said: “This is the track I know the least. I can’t believe we’ve got pole here. I knew we could do it, but it was quite tricky. I think we can be really strong for the race, too.”
Sunday’s first BTCC race is scheduled to start at 11.45am.
