Shedden converted pole position into race lead, ahead of Mat Jackson and Tom Chilton. Meanwhile Shedden’s teammate, Matt Neal, was slightly too quick away from the line and received a drive through penalty for a jump start.
Neal served his penalty immediately, which turned out to be the correct decision as the safety car was deployed at the end of the following lap after David Pinkney’s Vectra became stranded in the gravel.
Pinkney actually rejoined the race just before the safety car picked up the pack, so racing was able to resume after just a single lap running at reduced pace. That was enough for Neal to close up on the back of the pack, though.
After his disastrous first race that meant he started from the back of the grid, Jason Plato made rapid progress during the early laps, climbing up to ninth by the end of lap two.
Following the restart, Plato’s impressive performance continued as he passed first Tom Boardman, followed in quick succession by Lea Wood, Alex MacDowall and Steven Kane.
As the race reached its halfway point, Plato climbed to fourth when he passed Team Aon’s Tom Chilton.
Meanwhile, in the other Team Aon Ford, Tom Onslow-Cole claimed the lead with a move on Gordon Shedden at the chicane on lap 10.
The lead pair continued to battle as Plato moved up to third at the expense of Mat Jackson. It looked like the Chevrolet had the pace to challenge the top two, but despite having plenty of laps remaining, he did not challenge.
The points leader later revealed that he had opted to settle for third and a lower ballast quota for race three.
At the front, Onslow-Cole held on for his fourth win of the year, ahead of Shedden and Plato. Tom Chilton finished fourth, with Airwaves BMW duo Mat Jackson and Steven Kane just pipping fellow BMW driver Rob Collard for fifth and sixth respectively. Matt Neal ended the race in eighth, with Andrew Jordan ninth and James Nash tenth.
