Plato on pole at Brands Hatch

BTCC News | Sat 11th October 2014

The final qualifying session of the 2014 Dunlop MSA British Tour Car Championship took place on a drying track, with Jason Plato claiming his fourth pole position of the season.

It was a session that started with a damp track, but slick tyres were becoming the best option before the mid-point of the 30 minutes.

Jason Plato was quickest in the early stages, with a time of 1:41.239, but it was veteran Alain Menu who was first to make slick tyres work for him as the track became grippier.

Menu set several consecutive fastest laps in the Volkswagen, before Gordon Shedden put his Honda on to provisional pole position. However, the times were starting to tumble now and Menu took the spot back, only to lose out to Shedden once again.

The session was into its final five minutes before Plato set his best time of 1:33.949. There may well have been quicker laps to follow, but Dave Newsham slid off into the gravel in his Ford Focus. With the AmD car in an unsafe spot, the red flags came out and with 2:35 left on the clock, so did the chequered flag.

Plato starts on pole, with Tordoff second and Gordon Shedden, third. Colin Turkington starts round 28 from fourth place, ahead of Adam Morgan, Fabrizio Giovnardi and James Cole. Mat Jackson, Nick Foster and Dave Newsham complete the top ten places on the grid.

Jason Plato said, 的t was quite an interesting qualifying session, wasn稚 it. It would have been very easy to misread that. On the red flag lap, I was up again, so I think that would have been a stonker of a lap. I知 chuffed with that; it痴 a good start to our weekend. 的知 pleased with the car. I知 sure tomorrow will bring some curve balls. The main thing is we致e got two MGs at the front so we can try and get some results we致e got a Manufacturers title to win.

Colin Turkington said, 的知 delighted with where I致e qualified. Obviously it痴 always nicer to be on pole, but in a session like that, it痴 luck of the draw. You need to survive the first few laps of the session and you need a bit of luck. We池e in a good place.
