Hylkema focused on major Croft points haul

Formula Renault UK Championship News | Sat 19th June 2010

Croft Circuit in North Yorkshire hosts the ninth and 10th rounds of the Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship this weekend, 19th/20th June – a track which category front-runner Thomas Hylkema believes could provide his best results of the 2010 season.

The 21-year-old Dutchman, who is 10th overall in the driver standings, has suffered more than his share of on-track misfortune so far during the current campaign but aims to conclude the first half of the championship with a flourish this coming Sunday.

During official testing at the 2.12-mile circuit last month, Thomas steered his Manor Competition car to the eighth quickest time – just two 10ths of a second shy of the top four – and sees no reason why he can’t push for a top six start for each of the weekend’s races.

He said: “I enjoy Croft, there are some good high-speed and medium speed corners and it’s the sort of track where it’s critical to get the corners absolutely right. It can be easy to crash if you push too hard, especially at Sunny In and Sunny Out and the left-hander into the complex. You really need to use your mind at Croft – it’s very easy to be greedy and to then end up going off.

“We went well in testing at Croft last month but I know there is time to be gained so I’ll be working hard with the team to maximise my pace. I really hope we can have a decent and stable weekend at Croft with a good qualifying, two solid races and a lot of points. If I can take a couple of top five or top six starts and convert them into similar results I’ll be very pleased.”

During the previous event at Oulton Park in Cheshire just over a week ago, the Club Car and TORO backed racer salvaged 11th and 13th place finishes from a tricky weekend to consolidate his position in the coveted championship top 10. At Croft a few days from now though, Thomas aims to enjoy a well deserved trouble-free outing for the first time this season and deliver on his undoubted pace.
