Previous stars to achieve the accolade include Lewis Hamilton and Sarah’s older brother Nigel. At just 15, Sarah is one of the youngest-ever recipients of the title (created for drivers under the age of 24 years) and one of only a handful of females to be recognised in this way. The BRDC, which owns the Silverstone race track, is headed by former Formula One world champion Damon Hill.
“It’s great to become a ‘Rising Star’ and become part of the BRDC,” says Sarah. “I will get to meet all other kinds of drivers, which is good for my career. You have to work very hard to achieve this, and I know they’ve been watching my progress.”
As the Ginetta Junior championship begins the second half of its season, Sarah heads to Snetterton, Norfolk, this weekend at the top of the points table. She is raring to go following a six week break between races.
“I cannot wait to get out there!” she says. “With all the practice I’ve been doing I know I’ve got a lot of pace. I’m definitely targeting a big points haul to keep my championship lead, so I’m not going to try any risky moves. I am not letting the pressure get to me; I’m keeping cool.”
Younger brother David, 14, is also impatient to hit the track and looking to improve on the podium position he has so far scored this season. As one of the top rookies in the series, he is another up-and-coming star and currently lies joint sixth in the championship.
