Round 14 - Feature Race - Knockhill
The Feature race, round 14 of the championship suffered from a reduced grid following a series of unfortunate incidents. Dan Eaves' Peugeot Coupe couldn't be repaired in time after the damage sustained in the Sprint race, forcing him to take in the action from the pit lane. He did however play a crucial role in team-mate Steve Soper's pit stop later in the race, being handed the duty of removing the fluorescent strips from the side of the car.

Tom Ferrier and Gareth Howell both made the grid, despite retiring from the sprint race. However both failed to complete the green flag lap and retired to the pits. Ferrier with more engine problems, and Howell after losing part of the gearbox casing on his Ford Focus.

The rolling start to the race saw Jason Plato convert pole position to the race lead, with Muller, Thompson and Bennett slotting in behind. Tommy Erdos was fifth ahead of Steve Soper, before pulling off the track on the 2nd lap.

In the Production class Gordon Shedden maintained his position at the front of the field going in to the first corner, followed by the Honda Accord of James Kaye, and Simon Harrison in the HTML Peugeot 306.

Lap 1 saw Tom Boardman retire from the race with damaged suspension on his Peugeot 306, and his car being in a dangerous position, along with a dramatic involving Colin Blair which left his Alfa Romeo and the tyre barrier equally damaged, led to the safety car being brought out. Boardman's car proved difficult to move and the safety car remained on the track until lap 13. At the restart, Jason Plato proceeded to pull away from Thompson, who had already passed Muller. Phil Bennett fended off an overtaking attempt from Steve Soper before the Peugeot driver dropped off the back of the Astras.

On lap 19, Phil Bennett passed Yvan Muller, who slowed over the course of the next lap before entering the pits and retiring due to a power steering failure. Over the course of the following laps Mat Jackson passed Roger Moen for fifth position in the Production class, and James Kaye dropped back to third position behind team mate Simon Graves.

James Thompson was the first of the Astra driver's to make his mandatory pitstop, with a slight problem meaning that he was stationary for 11 seconds. At this point the clouds started to draw in, and rain looked like a real possibility. However Jason Plato and Phil Bennett both made their stops in the next two laps, leaving Steve Soper at the front of the field, and the VLR Peugeot team praying for the rain to fall. As the end of the pitstop window drew closer, the rain did start to fall lightly, but not enough to justify wet tyres, so Soper was forced to make his stop anyway, and he lost any chance of providing a shock as he sat in the pitlane for 24 seconds. The rain did hold off and no more pitstops were needed. After the stops, Phil Bennett emerged ahead of James Thompson, in 2nd position.

While the focus was on the Touring class, the battle for the lead in the Production class was also hotting up. Simon Graves closed on Gordon Shedden, before running in to the back of the Scot's Focus. On the following lap, Graves ran off at Duffas Dip, and was passed by Simon Harrison. The Team Kaliber Sport driver later retired from the race, as did GR Motorsport's Mat Jackson, whose Ford Focus started to fill with fumes before Mat was pulled from the car. There were few changes during the last few laps of the race, as Jason Plato took the chequered flag, and in the process claimed the single point that Vauxhall needed to secure the Manufacturer's title. Phil Bennett followed him home for his second 2nd place finish of the season, and James Thompson took third. Bennett and Thompson both suffered power steering failures during the race, the same as team mate Yvan Muller, but managed to maintain their positions. In the Production class, Shedden took victory ahead of James Kaye and Simon Harrison.

Driver Comments:

Jason Plato: "It's been a great, great weekend. I knew it was going to come and it was a matter of hooking up with my engineer, and we got what we wanted the car to do. He now knows what I want from the car and we've been getting better and better.

It's a shame for Yvan that he retired but we're even now and it'll be a good fight for the rest of the year. Although I've had a maximum score let's not forget that it's Vauxhalls weekend and without 888 and Vauxhall I wouldn't be talking to you now. So well done to them.

Before I was struggling with my set up and Yvan was on a high. Now I've got my set up as I like it and Yvans had a couple of bad results by his standards so it will be interesting to see how he reacts to this weekend.

We've got Snetterton next. I go really well there and I like the circuit. I had a good test there and was top of the times most of the day."

James Thompson: "I was going very strongly in the race and I was keeping up with Jason. We changed some bits and pieces in between the races but I dropped back in the later stages. We had a problem with the left front wheel in the pit stop which was immaterial because I lost power steering right after that. I did the last 20 laps without any power steering."

Gordon Shedden: "I'm delighted! It's awesome to come in and win the race. Second in the sprint was great, but to win the feature - it takes it to another level. We seemed to be behind the safety car for ages, but when it went in I was pulling away, but then the Honda just started pulling in again. He [Graves] made a do-or-die move at Taylors, and it didn't work. I lost time as Phil Bennett passed me, but I was far enough ahead by then."
