| Round 15 Sprint Race Report
The sprint race was declared a wet race by the track officials ay Snetterton, with all but a few drivers following the advice and starting with treaded tyres on their cars. Notable exceptions however were Dan Eaves and Steve Soper in the Peugeot Coupes.
The Touring class suffered two casualties before the race even got underway, with first Tom Ferrier entering the pits to retire, with smoke billowing from the engine bay, bringing a premature end to yet another race weekend for the JS Motorsports team. The second retirement was Phil Bennett who drove straight in to the garage, his Astra Coupe suffering from transmission failure. He was understandably disappointed, having impressed in qualifying and missing out on his chance to start from second on the grid.
As the lights went to green for the Touring class runners to start the race, the three remaining Astras were side by side going in to the first corner, with Muller leading from Thompson and Plato by the time they reached the exit. Tommy Erdos did manage to get past Plato briefly, before being repassed by the Astra driver.
In the Production class, an engine change for Gavin Pyper meant that he had to start from the back of the grid. At the front, Simon Graves came from second to take the lead, with pole sitter Simon Harrison dropping down to sixth from the line. GR Motorsport team-mates Gareth Howell and Mat Jackson clashed but this didn't stop Howell from moving in to 2nd position ahead of Rob Collard in third. Pyper made swift progress through the field, moving up to 11th position very quickly.
Conditions on the track remained wet and greasy, and not having qualified or tested in the wet, the drivers were all searching for the right braking points going in to the corners.
The decision to run slick tyres on the front of the Touring class Peugeots proved to be wrong, with Eaves and Soper lapping slower than the Production class runners.
Simon Graves continued to lead the Production class, and the race outright, as others began to struggle. James Kaye went straight on at the Esses on lap 7. Gavin Pyper's progress was halted when he retired with gearbox problems. Tom Boardman took an unconventional line through Riches, sliding off in to the long grass. Mat Jackson passed James Kaye to take fourth position in the class.
Back in the battle for the Touring class, Jason Plato took 2nd position away from Thompson, whilst Muller continued to lead. All were making their way through the Production field, and as Muller passed Rick Kraemer's Ford Focus, the two made contact, pushing Kraemer off the track. Dan Eaves decided to pit to change to wet tyres after having been lapped by the front-running Production cars. Meanwhile, Tommy Erdos continued in fourth position in his Lexus IS200.
In the Production class, there was no change at the front, with Graves leading from Howell and Collard. It was Simon Harrison who made late progress, passing Kaye to take fifth position.
Moving in to the final stages, the battle between the two classes hotted up, with Muller lapping just over 4 seconds faster than the Production drivers. Entering the final lap, he only had Graves to catch, and by the last corner he had closed up on the Accord. As the two raced for the line, it was Graves who just held on to win by less than a tenth of a second.
Driver Quotes:
Yvan Muller: "I was very focused at the start. At the first corner I managed to keep the inside line. James was a little bit quicker in places but overall we were more or less the same.
It was very greasy on the track and I nearly went off on the 3rd or 4th lap at the end of the straight, but then I changed the brake balance and it was ok.
When I passed the Ford (Rick Kraemer), he was on the left and there was a Peugeot on the right, and I was in the middle. I was really worried after that, I thought something would be broken, or a puncture maybe, but it was ok and I kept going."
James Thompson: "Yvan got the best of a bad start and I had to go around the outside of him and we were side by side going into the corner but he had the best line for the next turn. I tried to brake a little bit later than him but I ran a little wide so he just got in front of me. I had quite a good pace in the early part of the race so I managed to stay with him and give him a bit of hassle but when we got to the Production Class one of them had a bit of a moment in front of me and I got hit by one of them. I braked and had a bit of a tank slapper and that's when Jason got past me. I'm disappointed I lost my place because I really need to start scoring points from Jason. We did nothing wrong this weekend and the car was running really well."
Gareth Howell: "It's just relief after five races of despair. It was very difficult out there. I just let Simon (Graves) go, and worried about what Collard was doing. Driving in those conditions is very difficult, with no grip and mud and rubbish on the track, it's very hard to concentrate."
Simon Graves: "I'm delighted. It was good from start to finish. It was very difficult though, and very easy to make mistakes. I got in to a rhythm though and just tried not to make any mistakes. I was pulling away slowly, but it got more slippery towards the end, but I managed to keep it going."
Rob Collard: "I had a really good race and I made a great start. The conditions were perfect for us and it suits my driving style. I started putting the Focus under a bit of pressure for the first five or six laps but then I caught up with on of the Touring Class cars and I lost a bit of time and the gap was too great. I couldn't catch Simon or Gareth. I get in the car to win but I'm still very happy I got on the podium."
