| Round 17 Sprint Race Report
For the start of the sprint race, Phil Bennett took up his position on the front row of the grid, alongside Jason Plato. As the race got underway, it was Bennett who took the lead. Tommy Erdos took advantage of the rear wheel drive on his Lexus IS200 to move up to third from fifth away from the line. However he was soon repassed by all Astra Coupes.
As the Production class got underway, Simon Harrison was left on the grid as the rest of the field streamed past. He did get the car to move eventually, but by that point his chances had gone, and the class was led by Simon Graves from Moen and Pyper.
The end of the first lap saw the safety car pick up the field at the front of the Touring pack after Tom Boardman's Peugeot 306 was left in a dangerous position after he went off at the chicane, causing damage to the front left corner of the car. The safety car, driven by Jerry Mahoney, stayed out on the track for 6 laps, extending the race distance to 19.
Once the race got underway again, it didn't take Jason Plato long to pass Phil Bennett for the lead of the Touring class, with Yvan Muller doing the same to move up to second position. Tom Ferrier, who had pulled in to the pits on the green flag lap also rejoined the race.
In the Production class, the battle was heating up between Graves, Moen and Pyper for the lead. Moen passed Graves to take the lead at the Complex. While this was going on, James Kaye took fourth position away from Gareth Howell. Behind them, Paul O'Neill, Mark Lemmer and Jim Edwards Jnr were also swapping paint.
The latter stages of the race saw Phil Bennett spin out from third position at the chicane. He did continue, but along with a puncture to the left front tyre, this ended his chances of a podium finish. The final couple of laps of the race allowed Yvan Muller to close on Plato as they moved through traffic, but he was unable to get past. Roger Moen held on to take victory in the Production class, and overall in the race.
