This time last year…the weekend of 8th/9th April 2000…The BTCC descended on Brands Hatch for the
start of another season. But this didn't turn out to be just another season - it was the last ever
season of Super Touring.
Nine cars from three manufacturers (Vauxhall, Ford and Honda) made up the Super Touring field, with
the addition of class B (Super Production) to boost the number of cars on the track. Pre-season
title favourite was Honda's James Thompson.
The final test session at Brands Hatch before qualifying saw the Mondeos looking strongest, and this
was reinforced by Alain Menu taking pole position for both sprint and feature races. Menu went on to
take victory in the sprint race, followed home by Muller and Rydell.
The feature race could only be described as 'eventful'. Menu led from the start once again, but
three periods behind the safety car, and a tactically timed pitstop from the Vauxhall crew left
Jason Plato to power home to victory.
At the end of the first weekend of the 2000 BTCC calendar, Jason Plato led the championship from
Alain Menu and Muller.
A year on…who knows?!?…
