Egg Sport driver Phil Bennett has made a successful start to his BTCC career, with two podium finishes
from four races. He is continuously closing the gap between himself and his more experienced
Vauxhall team mates. Following the second meeting of the season, Phil tells us how things went from
his point of view.
The Sprint race:
"Well this one didn't end too badly from what was a disasterous start - 5 second board, into first,
red lights, more revs, green lights, off the clutch, oh dear! Silence, or it was very close,
fortunately I just managed to get back on the clutch and dial enough revs back into the Astra to
get off the line.
Whilst the whole thing only took a few seconds to sort out it was enough for the Peugeot of Steve
Soper to squeeze by and then having gone wide in the entry to the complex Dan Eaves eased past at
the exit. Hey ho.
Two corners later at the exit of Goodwood I was all over the rear of Dan and went by on the approach
to Church. Moments later I re-took Steve at the chicane after he made a mistake on the entry.
Fairly straight forward stuff really but it had allowed the gap to open to the rest of my Vauxhall
team mates and the remainder of my race was fairly quiet - finishing in 4th place."
The Feature race:
"What? Two pit stops??!! Err why? The opening sentences to my race engineer. We were bemused to
say the least. It would seem that without the solid option tyre Peugeot couldn't keep theirs on the
rim and so we had a race of reduced distance and with two compulsory stops. On the plus side we had
a rolling start so at least I couldn't stall!
Still on the approach to the lights I suddenly realised I couldn't see them at all and so half
guessed the start. Didn't turn out too badly as it happened and by the exit of Goodwood I was under
the rear wing of my team mates car. Not wishing to hit him I lifted off the throttle - only for
everyone else to go flat - so I lost touch a little bit.
Still the team had worked very hard to give me a fantastic set-up for the weekend and unlike Brands
Hatch where I was a little off the pace at Thruxton we were right on the money (well as near as damn
it!). Kept up a good pace and after the stops I was right with James - who had got held up badly by
traffic. With him having a problem with his 2nd stop it allowed me to take a solid 3rd place - in
fact by the end I'd almost caught Jason (who was having problems with vibration) finishing 0.8
seconds behind."
In Summary:
"Without wishing to sound too smug - I'm pretty pleased with this weekend. At last I'm a lot closer
to the pace and whilst it was a problem with James's pit stop that allowed me to get 3rd in the
feature race I didn't feel that it was too un-deserving due to my improved pace.
Big question mark for me is Peugeot. You have to ask the question "can it get any worse for them?"
I only hope that they can dig in and improve their car if only to make the series an even better
spectical. Still even if they don't in time for Oulton - you'll still have 4 Vauxhalls battling as
hard as ever - and next time it will be Egg's day."
