An open contest…
The Production class runners put on an impressive display in their separate sprint race at Brands
Hatch, with many people regarding it as the race of the day. The action started as early as the
first corner, with Paul O'Neill, brother of sporty spice, Mel C, rolling his Techspeed Peugeot 306
in the gravel trap at Paddock Bend.
Judging from form in test sessions and the first two rounds, the battle to watch will be between the
assorted Peugeot 306s, and the 2001 spec GR Motorsport Ford Focuses of Gareth Howell and Mat
Jackson, although James Kaye also looks strong in his Honda Accord.
The fast Thruxton circuit is likely to mean bigger gaps between the Touring and Production class
runners, but there is still likely to be much frantic action within the larger field that makes up
the Production class. The high speeds are also likely to take their toll on the engines, and it will
be a chance to see who has the most reliable equipment.
Overall this class is very close, and very difficult to call. There are several drivers who could be
considered as contenders for race wins at this stage, and it would be difficult to rule anyone out
of having a chance of being on the podium. They may not be considered as the 'main event', but the
Production class is definitely well worth watching - there is sure to be much excitement!
