Following the third meeting of the season, Phil Bennett again gives us the low down on the weekend's
events from his point of view.
What a weekend!!
Qualifying went pretty well actually - only a tenth behind my team mate James and so it was
encouraging to have carried the speed from Thruxton forward.
Sprint race
Life is full of if onlys - but I actually made a god initial start only to ruin it by taking 2nd
gear too early and the motor bogged! Arrgghh these standing starts, I'll get them spot on one day.
I think the Lexus and Peugeot of Soper did both me and James off the start, which was where the
problems started. For some reason James was making hard work of re-taking the boys up front and
having finally got past them all I went to over take James only to get turned around at Cascades by
him.
In fairness it wasn't really his fault - I went the long way around the outside of him and turn in
across him - I thought he might have backed off for me, I thought wrong and around she went! So at
the end another 4th place but I was absolutely on the pace and netted the 2nd fastest race lap.
Feature race
Well all I needed here was the fire and brimstone and we'd have had the lot. Made a great start and
overtook James around the outside at the first corner to lie 3rd. Then into Cascades on the 2nd lap
as I made the downshift from 6th to 4th - the gearbox didn't quite work as it should do. This
un-balanced the car and I spun.
OK - re-start pretty much last only to get a puncture a few laps later. The pit stop fixed all that
only then it started to jump out of 2nd gear out of the hairpin. Still not a huge problem as I was
back upto 5th and hard on the tail of Luby. Went to overtake him into Cascades and he simply turned
in on me. He went off and two corners later my cars gearbox finally gave up. It was a pity because
without these problems we would have had another podium.
Still we proved once again that we have got the speed, roll on the night race!
