Moen takes victory
Roger Moen made BTCC history at Oulton Park this afternoon by becoming the first Production class
driver to win a race outright. The Norwegian took advantage of the new sprint race regulations,
taking the chequered flag ahead of fellow Production class competitors Gavin Pyper and HTML team
mate, Simon Harrison.
Touring class honours fell once more to Yvan Muller - but his overall position was 7th (16 seconds
behind Moen). James Thompson and Jason Plato filled the remaining Touring class podium places.
As the lights went green, Muller disappeared in to the distance, but would have been amazed to see
that his closest rival was the Lexus of Kurt Luby. Luby having made a fantastic start to leap from
6th to 2nd. Jason Plato had to make up ground after a poor start. He explained, "If I hadn't
stalled, I'd have broken the rules. The clutch started to bite and I couldn't stop it rolling".
It was Gavin Pyper who led the race early on, making the pass on Moen at the first corner. On lap 3,
Egg Sport drivers James Thompson and Phil Bennett swapped paint at Cascades. It was Bennett who lost
out, dropping back to 6th as Thompson began the task of chasing down Luby, eventually passing him to
take away second position. Early race casualties were Paul O'Neill (Suspension) and Rob Collard, who
pitted on lap 4 to retire.
The decisive moment of the race came at Knickerbrook on lap 7. Roger Moen pulled alongside Pyper on
the approach and braked so late that Pyper was forced to straight-line the chicane, and thus lose
the place.
Tom Boardman had an impressive race - recent reliability problems and DNFs being laid to rest. He
crossed the line in 10th position overall. Jason Plato set the fastest lap of the race, with a time
of 1.28:478.
On lap 11, Gavin Pyper ran wide at Old Hall but managed to hold on to 3rd position. He and Harrison
fought hard to the end, with the two swapping positions several times, but it was Harrison who came
out on top to finish in 2nd position.
Overall, a race with plenty of excitement, not least with Luby running in second, even if only for a
few laps. The Production runners will be happy to be in the limelight for this race, and deserve
much credit for the show they put on. The Touring class is still being dominated by the Vauxhalls
there is hope for the others. One race down, the feature race still to come - with a longer race,
there's sure to be even more action and excitement to come!
