This time last year…Rounds 5 and 6 of the championship last year took place at Thruxton, with the
order of the meetings being slightly different to this year. The Vauxhall team looked in good form,
clearly having the upper hand in qualifying for both rounds.
In the sprint race, Yvan Muller led away from the start, and wasn't really made to work before coming
home to take the chequered flag. There was however slightly more action behind the Frenchman, with
Jason Plato battling with championship leader, and former team mate at Renault, Alain Menu, which
ended with the Swiss driver running over the infield.
The feature race was a slightly more eventful affair, but Vauxhall were again favourites going to
the grid, with Plato, Radermecker filling the first three spots respectively. Plato led in to the
first corner, but behind the leaders, Rickard Rydell clashed with Tarquini, and ended up hitting the
tyre barrier with considerable force, before rebounding and coming to a halt back on the track. This
led to the safety car picking up the field at the end of the first lap.
When the racing resumed, Jason Plato managed to extend his lead over teammate Radermecker from the
rolling start. In Class B, Mark Lemmer led from Alan Morrison, before the Northern Ireland driver
managed to pass him. Although not compulsory for them, the Class B runners also chose to make pit
stops during the longer feature race, as a result of the high levels of tyre wear at the fast
Hampshire circuit.
First of the Super Touring cars to pit was Tom Kristensen, followed by Plato, whose 4.4 second stop
helped his chances considerably. Back out on the track, Reid closed on fellow Mondeo driver Menu,
before coming in to the pits for his stop. Muller also came in on the same lap, leaving Vincent
Radermecker to claim an extra point for leading the race.
In an effort to lap Mark Lemmer, Menu appeared to forget to come in to the pits, forcing his team,
who were ready for him in the pit lane, to go back in to the garage to avoid incurring a
drive-through penalty. On the other hand, the Honda team were surprised to see Gabrielle Tarquini
come in to the pits, and weren't ready for him, leading to him driving over an airline, and his stop
being a prolonged one.
On the track, Matt Neal and (still injured) James Thompson's replacement for this meeting, David
Leslie, came together, forcing both off the track and inevitably in to retirement. Neal having
sustained terminal damage to the front splitter.
Controversially, Vauxhall brought team orders in to play towards the end of the race, forcing Jason
Plato to yield to Yvan Muller, to allow the Frenchman through to take the victory, and maximum
championship points. Alain Menu was third for Ford, followed by Reid and then Tarquini. Alan
Morrison was the only Class B driver to finish.
