Gareth Howell: Howell is hoping it "Feels so Good" at Donington Finale

Howell is hoping it "Feels so Good" at Donington Finale

Team Atomic Kitten driver Gareth Howell hopes to emulate Britain's No1 girl band by scoring a double No 1 this weekend as he approaches the seasons final two rounds still in contention for the Independents Cup. Despite giving the other 3 contenders a 22, 15 and 25-point start respectively after he missed the opening meeting, Gareth goes into the last two races 16 points behind leader Aaron Slight.

With 15 points for a win, there is everything still to race for. " All I can do is win both races," said Gareth "and then wait to see what happens to everyone else." After the last meeting at Brands Hatch, Gareth knows that he is the one that the others fear. An amazing performance in qualifying saw the 4 MG-ZS in the top 5 places on the grid, with Gareth qualifying 7/100ths behind pole man Anthony Reid. His Independents Cup win in the Sprint was his second of the season and his 10th Independents podium finish. Despite Lady Luck robbing him of a second win in the feature, where he led outright for the second meeting in succession, he was later pleasantly surprised when ITV commentator Ben Edwards presented him with a magnum of champagne as their "Driver of the Day".

"I was really shocked," said a stunned Gareth. " I thought he just wanted a chat about the weekend in general. He was really complimentary about my driving and it felt good to be racing on equal terms with guys like Yvan (Muller) and Jimmy (Thompson)."

The Atomic Kitten girls will be coming along to Donington this weekend to cheer on Gareth and his teammate Colin Turkington and will be signing autographs during the pit lane walkabout on Sunday. Jenny, Liz and new mum Natasha are currently at No1 in both the Album and singles chart. Gareth will be qualifying at 13:35 on Saturday 21st September and racing on Sunday 22nd at 12:55 and 16:15.
