| Contenders in the Green Flag MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) are preparing themselves for yet another titanic battle for overall honours as the hottest motorsport package in the UK rolls into Silverstone Circuit on 1/2/3 June.
Spectacular racing is guaranteed as the Home of British Motorsport plays host to the second of three 'Super Weekenders', where the cream of the UK's single seater, sports and saloon car series line up to support Rounds Seven and Eight of the headline Green Flag BTCC. Kicking off the three day event on Saturday 1 June, fans can expect to witness the British Formula 3 Championship, the British GT Championship and the fabulous new World Sportscar Invitation Trophy - a real treat for historic race fans. Other series adding their weight to this superb support race package include Formula Renault, Renault Clio, Porsche Cup and Formula Ford, all providing an explosion of dawn to dusk racing over the weekend.
But it is undoubtedly the intense rivalry in the Green Flag British Touring Car Championship that will provide the biggest adrenalin rushes on track.
The championship so far has been fiercely contested producing the type of close racing that has left Vauxhall Motorsport’s Yvan Muller, team-mate James Thompson and Egg Sport’s Matt Neal all sharing the lead at the top of the points table. Not willing to share the spoils of victory all three go head to head on Monday 3 June in their bid to lift the Champion’s trophy. A betting man is most likely to put his money on Neal for the first race as he is carrying only 18kgs of success ballast compared to Muller’s 42kgs and Thompson’s 30kgs.
However, all three drivers face tough opposition in the form of Oxford based Anthony Reid for MG Sport and Racing. He has already visited the podium twice this season including last time out at Thruxton and is currently lying fourth in the standings. Reid’s team-mate Warren Hughes has also clocked up valuable points for the Sunbury based equipe, with two superb second place finishes.
Towcester based Andy Priaulx (Honda Racing) and Woodstock based Tim Harvey (Team Halfords) are also in the running, illustrated by the fierce fight for third place at Thruxton between Priaulx’s Honda Civic Type-R, Harvey’s Peugeot 406 Coupé, Reid’s MG ZS and Neal’s Vauxhall Astra Coupé. Neal managed to fend off all threatening advances to secure his third podium finish. But it is all to play for at Silverstone!
New manufacturer Proton is also pushing its Proton Impians to match the pace of the front men. Banbury based David Leslie has successfully secured a third place for the team and both Leslie and his Team Petronas Syntium Proton team-mate Phil Bennett will be hoping to visit the winners’ rostrum next weekend.
Bennett commented:
“The home of motorsport, the BRDC and my first BTCC win – Silverstone is a fantastic place! For the driver it offers arguably the greatest challenge of all UK circuits, as it contains a blend of everything. We have the high speed corners of Copse and Bridge, the low speed technical corners of Abbey and Luffield. Add into the mix low Formula One friendly kerbs, which we totally monster in our BTCC cars and there is a bit of everything to keep you entertained. I will definitely be looking to produce some giant killing performances over the bank holiday weekend!”
Alongside the cut and thrust action that will continue in the Independents’ Cup* between tied leaders Harvey and Barwell Motorsport’s Aaron Slight, fans are sure to witness yet another epic scrap in the Production category. Synchro Motorsport’s James Kaye has pulled out a 13 point lead in the BTC Production Drivers’ Championship and will no doubt spearhead the Production thrills and spills at the Northamptonshire track, even when carrying the maximum success ballast for the Sprint Race.
This opportunity to see a plethora of talent race under the same roof cannot be missed. To catch your piece of the high-octane action, call the ticket hotline on 01474 875254 to secure the best seats in the house.
* Re-introduced for 2002, the Independents’ Cup is open to BTC Touring drivers who are not entered with Manufacturer support.
