| Vauxhall Astra Coupe drivers, Matt Neal and Paul O'Neill found themselves
flying the flag for the Vauxhall camp today in the two twenty-minute
qualifying sessions for Rounds 7&8 of the Green Flag MSA British Touring Car
Championship. Birmingham's Neal, driving the EggSport Astra Coupe claimed a
stunning pole position in the closing two minutes of the Sprint qualifying
session at Silverstone whilst his teammate O'Neill kept the pressure on to
claim third place on the grid. O'Neill then went on to narrowly miss out on
pole himself for the Feature race grid but lines up on the front row in
second place.
Vauxhall Motorsport's James Thompson and Yvan Muller suffered with both the
high track temperatures and their 30kgs and 42kgs respectively of success
ballast. Whilst Muller lines up seventh and twelfth, Yorkshireman, Thompson,
lines up fifth for both the Sprint and Feature races and sees no reason why
that should stop him claiming a podium place tomorrow having won from the
back of the grid earlier in the season.
Bank Holiday Monday's Touring car races begin at 12.10pm with the 15-lap
Sprint Race (Rd 7) whilst the lights go green for the 25-lap Feature Race
(Rd 8) at 4.10pm.
Vauxhall Motorsport Quotes:
Yvan Muller, Car 2, Vauxhall Motorsport Astra Coupe
Sprint - 7th, 1:28.677, Feature - 12th, 1:28.682
"The track is really not very nice today, it is greasy and dirty. I am
carrying maximum ballast and was definitely losing time in the straights.
Traffic was also quite bad. But, anything can happen tomorrow."
James Thompson, Car 3, Vauxhall Motorsport Astra Coupe
Sprint - 5th, 1:28.581, Feature - 5th, 1:28.483
"Well, I've won from the back of the grid before now so I don't see why I
can't do it from fifth! Having said that, I did suffer today with heat. I
think we underestimated just how high the track temperature would be and I
was struggling with understeer. The car was not set-up for the heat and
there wasn't time to change mid session. I certainly think we've got the
pace to beat the rest of the field though in the races."
