The Honda Racing British Touring Car team enjoyed its best ever team qualifying performance at Croft today. The three Civic Type Rs took second, third and fourth places on the grid behind the Vauxhall Astra of James Thompson for tomorrow’s first race at the North Yorkshire circuit.
Alan Morrison had been running in second for most of the session but was beaten to a front row position by his team-mate Matt Neal in the closing seconds. Tom Chilton also put in an impressive performance to qualify in fourth and claim his best ever grid position.
Matt Neal: “I got caught up with the traffic for the first couple of runs but I got a good clear run with my third set of tyres and just beat Alan to the front row spot. To be honest I’m a bit disappointed to have been jumped by just one Vauxhall but it’s fantastic for Honda Racing to take second, third and fourth. The tables are definitely turning now it’s usually one of us surrounded by Vauxhalls but tomorrow it will be the other way round. We’re all singing from the same hymn sheet, we all want to win races and we should do well tomorrow.”
Alan Morrison: “ Matt just got a good time in at the end and got me off the front row but that’s ok the main thing is that it’s a Honda Racing two, three, four. The car has been getting quicker all weekend and today was the best yet so we’re hoping for a good result. We’ve got a really good race set-up for tomorrow so if one of us can jump Jimmy at the start it should be interesting.”
Tom Chilton: “I’m really pleased with my qualifying performance. It’s my best ever grid position and I was only three tenths behind Matt. I’m really looking forward to the race tomorrow and am hoping to get a good start. Who knows, it could even be a one, two, three for Honda Racing at the chequered flag!”
