RACE ONE
Warren Hughes broke his 2003 duck with an accomplished victory in the first race of today's Bank Holiday British Touring Car Championship meeting at Brands Hatch. Hughes led home an MG 1-3 with team-mate Colin Turkington finishing third behind championship leader Ivan Muller, after the WSR run MG crew out-gunned the Vauxhall team in the pits.
Muller and James Thompson occupied the front row and established a lead at the start, pulling away slightly from Hughes who kept a watching brief in third. Behind them Honda's Matt Neal made a great start to move up to fourth and set about defending his position from MG's Colin Turkington and Paul O'Neill in the third Vauxhall.
As the leading trio pulled away, Turkington made concerted advances into Neal's fourth place and it wasn't until the Honda driver prepared to pit on lap 15 that the MG nipped down the inside at Clearways. O'Neill tried to follow Turkington through past Neal and was very nearly dragged into the pits as the Honda pealed down on to the apron.
After the shake-up in the stops Muller found himself chasing down Hughes for the lead. Turkington was on his own in an excellent third place.
"It's about bloody time!" said Hughes, who has endured a torrid middle of the season. "This win has been a long time coming and the last couple of races have been dreadful. I was really focused coming here and I really wanted to win at Brands Hatch. The WSR team made some great pit stops during the race and I knew I was going to get pressure from Ivan, but around here it is one thing catching and another thing passing so I was ready for him. Then when he developed a problem with his car late on I thought to myself: 'I'll take this thank you very much'. It's a fantastic feeling." said Warren Hughes
RACE TWO
Colin Turkington took a dramatic last gasp victory in the second of today's two British Touring Car Championship races at Brands Hatch after championship leader Ivan Muller made an uncharacteristic mistake. It was Turkington's first win in the class and wrapped up a superb weekend for MG after team-mate Warren Hughes had won the first race.
As the field pulled away from the safety car on the last l ap, Muller locked up and went sideways into Paddock which allowed Turkington to nip through on the inside. To compound the Frenchman's misery, Anthony Reid, in the second MG took a dive up the inside into Druids and both cars went into the gravel trap. Reid finished fourth and Muller fifth and Hughes sixth.
"I'm over the moon," said Turkington. "I was lining up a move on Yvan [Muller] at Paddock anyway because my car has been good through there all weekend, but I couldn't believe it when he went wide. The car has been awesome. I'm just lost for words."
Dick Bennetts, managing director of WSR said:"This has been one of the best weekends for WSR this year. Two wins, a third, 2 fastest laps and teams and manufacturers award. What a great weekend! I am very happy for both Warren and Colin having got their first wins for 2003. Also the WSR crew for their sub 5 second pit stops, fantastic!"
