All three Honda Racing drivers will be aiming to finish on a high note as the final rounds of the 2003 British Touring Car Championship take place at Oulton Park this weekend.
After a win at Donington Park earlier this month, Matt Neal is hoping to go one better on the Island circuit, cementing a bronze position in the series. Alan Morrison will hope to build on his experience gained at the track last year and Tom Chilton is aiming for seventh heaven in the final standings.
All three are expecting some tough racing in their Civic Type Rs on the demanding circuit, especially with unyielding pressure from Vauxhall as they aim for a one-two-three in the championship.
Neal took his fifth win of the season in round 17 at Donington. He took the lead from the start and regained it on the penultimate lap despite coming out in second place following a pitstop. He wasn’t so lucky in the second race, coming tenth, despite starting in pole position. This weekend he is hoping send Honda Racing fans home happy with an Oulton double.
“It is the last event of the season and I really want to prove that Honda Racing can win two races in one day,” said Neal. “My car will be light which should help with qualifying, so I'm hopeful of a good result in the first race.
“The Vauxhalls will be carrying some extra ballast so that should help us out as well. I'm equal third in the championship and I'm expecting some pressure because obviously Vauxhall will be going for the top three finishing positions - but I am determined to finish in the top three.
“Oulton Park is a challenging circuit. It's very fast and you have to be very precise to avoid making mistakes. The Civic Type R feels really good at the moment and I was disappointed not to show its true potential in the second race.”
For Alan Morrison the end of the season has come too quickly, but he is hoping to keep his fifth spot in the championship with a sparkling show. He managed fifth place in both rounds at Donington, despite more bad luck that saw him at the back of the field after a clash with another car.
“I'm looking forward to Oulton Park but I'm disappointed that it's the last race of the season. I'm hoping to go there and get a really good result,” said Morrison. “It would be great to end the season on a high with a win. I like driving at Oulton. I drove the Honda Racing Civic Type R there last year in one of the first races of the season so the experience I gained will be valuable for me this weekend.”
Tom Chilton is hoping to move from ninth to seventh spot but knows it will be tough on a very demanding circuit.
“It's a really challenging circuit with a lot of hard braking points,” he said. “Other than Donington Park it's one of the hardest tracks in the UK for brakes because you go from high speed into tight corners quite a few times in the space of one lap. You need a car that's really good on the brakes with lots of front-end grip. We are shaking the cars down on Thursday to bed in the new brakes and discs because we need to be able to brake hard and then accelerate well out of the corners.”
