Driver Quotes

Race One:

Yvan Muller: That was a fantastic race but it was very hard. I had a small problem with gear lever which disturbed me a little bit. But the team did a fantastic pit stop and then I took lead. I was pushing really hard but at the same time I wanted to conserve my tyres.

I was thinking about the Paul O'Neill incident at Brands Hatch on the last lap when Neal was threatening me but I think Neal has also thought about it as well! I was wondering if he’d try to take me at the chicane. I was looking out for him!

Matt Neal: The car felt strong the first couple of laps. I got a bit of a lead and then Muller was better under braking into last chicane and then I lost advantage. We had a delay in pit stop and I went to third. The new set of tyres were good so I managed to catch Thompson by really throwing the hammer down and then I overtook him and caught Muller. I tried to have a stab at him on the last lap but it wasn’t meant to be. If I’d have had an extra couple of laps, I’d have got him!

Paul O’Neill: I made a really good start and I saw Morrison had jumped the lights so I knew he would have to come in for a drive through. I saw a really big accident behind me which was a couple of Astras hitting one another and I knew the safety car would come out. I was told to stay close to Morrison. He pitted and I was up with Thompson who I lost time to in complex after I made a little mistake. Thompson pitted and then I came in on the next lap and when I came out we were side by side. He drove round the outside and I knew if I’d have stayed there we would have hit one another so I backed off. Then Matt Neal came out of the pits and I was close to him. I probably could have overtaken him on the first few laps as his tyres were cold but then after a number of laps, his tyres worked better than mine. Then I overtook Thompson after he went side by side with Matt Neal and ended up on the kerbs. He got sideways and nearly went into a spin. He gathered it up and I went past him.

We ran a lot of camber this weekend and did some race runs and the car is great. The only problem we are having is the kerbs. We’re bending the rims but I didn’t have a puncture in that race. The tyres were going off towards the end of the race but that’s due to the ballast we are running.

Tom Boardman: I knew I had the pace. I knew Bentwood would get away quickly being in a BMW but he didn’t so I took advantage! I’m really happy with that!

Luke Hines: The first lap was so busy! You have to be so careful. If there’s an incident like today then you just have to hit and hope you get through it. It doesn’t ruin your race but it’s just a risk you have to take. That’s motor racing for you.

The race was good but we had problem with sump. I got to second but Tom had such a big lead. I was pushing but couldn’t catch him. I pushed too hard and wrecked tyres whereas he nursed his which gave him the advantage.

Race Two:

Yvan Muller: That was a lot harder than the first race as it was a lot warmer. The car was understeering in the first part of the race which is why I pitted early and after that the car was great on the new tyres. Again, the team did an excellent job with the pit stop. They were so quick that I hardly had time to put the car in gear to go!

Alan Morrison: The car was running really well all weekend and I really should have got a podium in the first race but unfortunately, I got a drive through.

I made a good start and I was beside Paul (O’Neill) but he squeezed me out in the first corner. I knew the car had the speed and as the race unfolded, I just picked the cars off one by one.

There are always improvements to be made to the car and the team are working really hard and giving the best that they can. It’s going to be a tight championship.

Paul O’Neill: I made a great start although Morrison got alongside me. To be fair to him, anybody would have hit me but he backed off at the corner and fair play to him. I just ran a few laps and it was really close. The MG’s were going really well but I knew that they would drop off so my biggest threat was Alan (Morrison). I had a bit of an altercation with James (Thompson) when he cut me up!! After that I settled down to race pace and I knew the pit crew would do a good job. They did a great job!! After the pit stop, I went easy on the tyres. I was behind Morrison and he made a big mistake and I caught him. I was chasing him but he was so good through the complex whereas I was taking it easy. Towards the end of the race, I started to feel a vibration so I decided to back off and settle for third.

Great weekend! I’m pleased with that!
