Scots racer Gavin Pyper heads to Silverstone his weekend for rounds seven and eight of the 2003 British Touring Car Championship with a simple target - to win the Independents category in both races. Pyper has brought his GA Motorsport Vauxhall Astra home at the head of the class three times in the first six races, but never more than once per meeting.
"I'm really looking forward to Silverstone," says 23-year-old Pyper, "we took a win at Thruxton and more of the same would be good there. The key will be finishing both races - so far, if we have finished, we have won the Independents class.
"Silverstone is good circuit and one I enjoy. We haven't tested the Astra there so Saturday morning's Free Practice will be important as an opportunity to work on set-up and make sure we get the car right. We have been quick at every track so far, and want to be again at Silverstone.
"Our obvious goal is to win both races. The aim is to leave Silverstone with a healthy points lead in the Independents Cup. If there is the chance to get on the podium overall then I will take it if I can be sure I can do it safely and still get the Independents points - that is the most important thing."
In the meeting at Thruxton two weekends ago, Pyper won the Independents category in the opening race, and finished a superb sixth overall amongst the factory-backed Touring Cars. He is currently second in the Independents Cup points table, despite having won more races than any other driver, just three points behind the leader.
