West Surrey Racing: Reid and Turkington ready to hatch victory at Brands

The British Touring Car Championship makes its second visit of the year to Brands Hatch on 21st/22nd August, as the 2004 season reaches its peak. The circuit has traditionally proved to be a strong favourite for the WSR prepared MG ZS.

It is a circuit that has witnessed many of the team’s milestones. In 2001, Anthony Reid drove in treacherous conditions to secure MG’s first BTCC win and in 2003 Colin Turkington took the chequered flag to claim his maiden victory in the BTCC series.

Following Anthony’s two race wins at Knockhill, the gap is closing at the top of the Championship leader board and there’s all to play for at the Kent circuit. Carrying maximum success ballast will not be easy for the opening race and Saturday’s qualifying session, but Anthony remains optimistic. He said: “We’re going to Brands Hatch on a high following our successes at Mondello, Croft and Knockhill. The car’s proving to be one of the strongest in the Championship and I’m confident that our run of good form will continue.”

Colin Turkington also visited the podium at Knockhill claiming third place in the final race of the day after his blistering drive form the back of the grid. Following his win at Mondello Colin’s eager to take top honours once again. He said: “Although I’ll be carrying an extra 18kg in weight following my third place at Knockhill, I’m still confident that I can put in a good qualifying time. I know that the car is strong, even with the extra weight, and it certainly has the pace. My last race where I came from the very back of the grid shows that I have no problem passing people and I’m looking forward to some good results at Brands.”

Team principal, Dick Bennetts added: “The consistency which we’re now starting to show is proving that the MG ZS is the car to beat. I think some of the other teams are starting to feel the pressure. When you consider that we’re racing on a significantly smaller budget than some teams, and we have only done two days (330km) testing this season, I can understand why! We know the car is strong at Brands (Hatch) and with Colin and Anthony’s previous form I’m confident of some good results.”
