Collard Racing: COLLARD TAKING FINAL SHOT AT BTCC PODIUM

Last chance for Hampshire racer in 2004

Rob Collard and the Collard Racing team have just three chances left to fulfil their 2004 MSA Green Flag British Touring Car Championship season ambition – a place on the overall podium. Having taken his Vauxhall Astra to fourth overall at Oulton Park earlier this year, Sunday’s three races at the Donington Park, East Midlands, circuit provide Rob with his final opportunities to go one better and take a top three finish.

“I’m aiming for a podium in the final three races,” says Rob, from Eversley in Hampshire. “I was targeting doing that this year, and it will be a disappointment if we haven’t achieved it.

“I’d also like to finish fifth in the Independents points – which means overhauling James Kaye this weekend. He has been really quick lately and his team have found some real speed in his Honda, but if we show the pace we had at Donington last year, and at the media day at the start of this season, then we have a chance.

“Our car is good right now. We were right on the pace at Snetterton and we have only done the normal rebuild between races and should be quick again this weekend.”

Rob competes in the Independents category of the BTCC, for private teams, but in the races takes on the might of the factory teams for overall success. In 2003 he won the Independents title – a superb achievement from the smallest team on the grid. Currently sixth in the Independents points against big-budget opposition, Rob is 15 points behind James Kaye in fifth, with a maximum of 45 points up for grabs on Sunday.

Qualifying is at 15.20 on Saturday (September 25th) afternoon, while the three 16-lap races are scheduled for 11.20, 13.40 and 16.40 on Sunday, with live race coverage on ITV.
