West Surrey Racing: Race Report

Rounds 19, 20 & 21, Snetterton, Norfolk

Free Practice & Qualifying

Rob Collard, driving WSR's MG ZS, set the fourth fastest time in the first of Saturday's two free practice sessions. He then improved on this to be fastest overall with the best lap time of the day so far in practice session two. In qualifying, he went even quicker, but had to settle for second position on the starting grid.

Rob Collard: "I'm very pleased with this as it marks an upturn in our qualifying performance compared to recent rounds. We are sure we've found something extra from the car which will benefit us for the rest of the season."

A hydraulics problem meant that Rob was unable to get as good a start as normal and he slipped back to sixth position. On the final lap, he overtook former WSR driver Colin Turkington's "works" Vauxhall in a brave manoeuvre at the end of the 150mph Rivet Straight to take fifth position.

Rob Collard: "It was very frustrating. The whole team felt confident of a podium finish before the race. I was pleased with the move I put on Turkington - it requires a lot of commitment at that speed, but the set up of the MG gave me the confidence to do it."

Race 2

Weather / Track Cloudy / Dry

Rob maintained position throughout to take his second fifth place finish of the day.

Rob Collard: "We changed the clutch and this enabled me to get a good start and hold my position. The race was run at a fast and furious pace and overtaking opportunities were very limited. I finished 5th, yet I was only 3.6 seconds off the winner."

Race 3

Weather / Track Cloudy / Dry

Car no.21 Rob Collard Start Position: 6th Finish Position: 11th

At the end of the formation lap, Rob made an unscheduled pit stop so the WSR team could bleed his car's brakes as he had felt unsure of their performance on the way to the starting grid. This meant he joined the race from the pit lane one lap behind the leaders and finished 11th.

Rob Collard: "Once we realised there might be a problem, the team worked flat out to get me into the race, but the lap at Snetterton is quite short and so by the time I came back out, I was just over a lap down. Again, the pace of the car was extremely competitive over the race distance."

Dick Bennetts, Team Principal, WSR: "Having qualified second fastest and in each of the races set very competitive lap times, two fifths and an 11th are disappointing results. However, we must look forward, and our next race meeting is at Knockhill in Scotland where last year the WSR MG won twice. It is a circuit we feel suits the MG and which can provide us with a very real chance of winning."
