VX Racing could clinch its 100th BTCC race win when the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship visits Silverstone this Sunday (September 18), and can also provisionally be crowned BTCC manufacturers' champion for the fifth successive year.
This weekend's event is the home race for the team, with Vauxhall's head office in nearby Luton and the race team based near Banbury.
Vauxhall's team has been in sight of its 100th race win for the last two race weekends. The three-car team arrived at Snetterton one month ago needing two wins to reach the century, but left the Norfolk circuit still needing them. At the following race weekend in Knockhill, Scotland, Yvan Muller brought the team closer to the three-figure milestone by scoring victory in the first race. Now standing on 99 race wins, VX Racing has three opportunities from the three-race Silverstone event to make history.
Silverstone is the penultimate event of this season's BTC Championship, and is set to be a thrilling weekend for race fans. The drivers' championship is still undecided, with VX Racing's Yvan Muller chasing leader Matt Neal, with 30 points separating the two.
Ahead of the weekend, the VX Racing Astra Sport Hatch is taking to the roads and roundabouts of Milton Keynes on Thursday evening (September 15) to make some demonstration runs, as are other cars from the championship. This BTCC promotion, staged outside the Xscape centre, is expected to draw a strong crowd.
VX Racing's other two drivers, Colin Turkington and Gavin Smith, will also attend the Milton Keynes event to meet the fans and sign autographs.
Yvan Muller is looking forward to the weekend: "The title chase is very hot now. It's going to be quite tough for me to wrestle for the crown, but, as I do for each race, I shall be trying to win, so that I have given it the best shot possible. I don't know whether Silverstone will suit our car, but maybe it will rain, which is good for me!"
VX Racing travel to Silverstone in the lead of the manufacturers' championship and second in the team championship. Muller is second in the drivers' championship, Turkington fifth, and Smith tenth. The Silverstone event will be the ninth of ten race weekends in the 2005 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship.
