BTCCPages.com: Race 3 Report

Race two winner Matt Neal drew the lowest possible card to reverse the top six on the grid for race three. It handed pole position to Vauxhall’s Gavin Smith, and he initially held on to the lead, but only for a single lap. Second time around, James Thompson passed the Astra at Clervaux to take the lead of the race.

Thompson was involved in the race’s early action when he made contact with Fabrizio Giovanardi at the first corner. The Italian ran through the gravel trap before rejoining well down the order. Once he was at the front, Thompson was quickly able to open up a sizeable lead as Smith held up those behind him.

Colin Turkington was third in the early stages of the race, but he succumbed to the pacey Integra of Gordon Shedden after four laps. Shedden clearly becamse frustrated at Smith’s lack of pace in front, as he hit the Astra off the track at Sunny. However, second place was fairly shortlived for the Scot, as he himself went off with a puncture on lap 12.

Whatever was going on behind, Thompson was cruising to victory at the front. Colin Turkington was also fairly comfortable in second. There was a repeat of the race two battle to settle the final podium place. Once again, it was Matt Neal who got the better of Plato, this time beating his rival to the line by just 0.008secs.

However, after the race, Neal was adjudged to have pushed Plato too far off the track as he tried to overtake. The positions were swapped around, and Plato claimed third spot.

Behind the front three, Fabrizio Giovanardi took fourth, just ahead of VX Racing teammate, Tom Chilton. Mike Jordan was sixth, in front of Gavin Smith in the third Astra. James Kaye, Rob Collard and Jason Hughes rounded out the top ten.
