BTCCPages.com: Race two report

The second race of the day at Snetterton was another action-packed thriller. There was no rain this time, but there was still plenty to keep the crowd amused throughout as Jason Plato made it two from two for the day.

The start of the race was a repeat of round 19 as Plato led away, with Giovanardi getting the jump on Thompson to move into second. The leaders all made it safely through the first corner, but the same was not true further down in the pack. Dave Pinkney lost control of his Formula Nuts sponsored Integra midway through Riches, spinning to the outside. He was collected by Martyn Bell in the BMW, which damaged both cars.

The safety car was deployed as Pinkney limped back to the pits with his bonnet up over the windscreen. A handful of safety car laps were enough to get track clear, and racing could restart.

Following the restart, there was a four-way fight for eighth position, with James Kaye, Mike Jordan and Colin Turkington all challenging the Team RAC MG of Rob Collard.

Back at the front, Giovanardi and Thompson resumed their first race shenanigans. Thompson challenged the Italian, before running wide and then being collected as he rejoined the track. Matt Neal and Gareth Howell then started to challenge Giovanardi. There was contact between Giovanardi and Neal, leaving the Vauxhall driver with a badly damaged car, forcing him to retire. Almost simultaneously, James Kaye parked his Honda Civic in the crops on the outside of Riches.

Plato continued to lead, but there was a change for second spot, as both Matt Neal and James Thompson passed Gavin Smith, who had been running second.

Over the course of the remaining laps, Matt Neal chased down race leader Plato. With a championship to win, the straightforward option for Neal seemed to be sitting in second, but Neal had other ideas. The Team Halfords driver was determined to go for the win and this was clear on the final lap. Two separate incidents saw contact between Neal and Plato, and the final result was Neal dropping down through the order as Plato held on for the win.

James Thompson crossed the line in second position, ahead of Colin Turkington in third. Mike Jordan was just outside the podium positions in fourth, ahead of Gordon Shedden in fifth. Tom Chilton finished sixth, ahead of recovering Matt Neal, who gained a place at the expense of teammate Gareth Howell for the second race in succession. Howell was ninth with Eoin Murray completing the top ten.
