Henley-in-Arden's Mat Jackson has thanked racing rival and fellow West
Midlander Adam Jones for helping his Jacksons MSport team repair its damaged
BMW in time for this weekend's penultimate Dunlop MSA British Touring Car
Championship rounds at Knockhill in Scotland.
Mat's #48 BMW was left badly damaged after becoming involved in a multi-car
pile-up at Brands Hatch. Mat drove the hastily patched-up car to fourth and
then third places to consolidate his sixth place in the table and regain the
Independents Drivers lead.
But his participation at Knockhill was still in doubt until replacement
parts arrived in time from BMW's motorsport division in Munich, Germany.
Mat says: "Even then it was going to be very tight - we had to cancel all
bank holiday weekend leave for the team and everyone's been flat out
stripping down the car, straightening it out and rebuilding it. It's been an
almighty effort from involved. Everyone has pulled their weight and it's
just been a great team effort.
"On behalf of our team a big thank you to Adam Jones's family who run
Boywork Solihull and have put on shift workers over the weekend to get the
car back into shape. Their help has been invaluable. Nick Whale BMW have
also been of great support and managed to supply the parts we needed in
time."
Mat is hopeful of strong results in all three BTCC rounds at Knockhill. He's
won three times at the Scottish track in wet and dry conditions - the
circuit is notorious for its inclement weather - the last two years
including twice last year on his way to the SEAT Cupra title. However these
will be his first races on the track as a BTCC driver.
His races will all be shown in full with some three and a half hours of
coverage on ITV4 and ITV1. Subscription channel Setanta Sports 2 is also
showing live all-day coverage (see details below).
Mat adds: "We don't want it too wet - the BMW's rear-wheel-drive is fine if
its greasy, but a really wet surface hurts us. The kerbs at Knockhill in
some places are also very severe so it'll be important not to overstep the
mark on them in a RWD car.
"From a pure driving point of view, Knockhill is my favourite on the
calendar along with Oulton Park. The dips and hills and off-camber corners
make it very challenging and also very rewarding when you piece together the
perfect lap. The crowds there also are very enthusiastic and among the most
welcoming. I also enjoy the fact they've kept the track as it is and not put
in huge run-offs - some sections really catch your attention and it means
the crowds feel much closer to the action which is very important from an
atmosphere point of view.
"My goals at Knockhill are simple. Three solid points finishes, hopefully on
the podium a couple of times, and challenge for fifth in the championship
and, now we've got it back, to build on our lead in the independents
championship."
