For tomorrow’s round 19 of the 2008 HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) at Oulton Park, Cheshire, championship leading team VX Racing have qualified all three drivers within the top ten.
During the 30-minute qualifying session, all three VX Racing cars performed consistently well despite the soaring temperatures. Tom Onslow-Cole qualified as the fastest VX Racing driver of the day, and will start from fourth on the grid for tomorrow’s race, having achieved a lap time of 1:28.141.
Reigning champion Fabrizio Giovanardi qualified hot on Tom’s heels in fifth despite carrying maximum success ballast of 45 kg, with fellow VX Racing team-mate Matt Neal carrying 36 kg and starting from seventh. SEAT’s Jason Plato qualified in pole position for tomorrow’s race, with a lap time of 1:27.688.
Fabrizio Giovanardi #1
“We spent the morning making alterations to the set-up of the car, hoping to find a little more speed, but because I’m carrying maximum success ballast we really couldn’t make that much difference. Overall I think that the car ran very well, and we will just have to wait and see what happens in tomorrow’s race!”
Matt Neal #4
“I think we have a very good car heading into round 19, and I’m pleased with my qualifying performance. It should be interesting tomorrow because we are right on the back of the SEAT’s. Their diesel cars will be heavy into the corners because of the nature of Oulton Park, and hopefully we can gain some advantage as the race progresses.”
Tom Onslow-Cole #10
“It is very tight here at Oulton, and I missed out on third place by just nine thousandths of a second! I think we really have a good chance tomorrow though, but I’m hoping it cools down a little so that we aren’t at such a disadvantage compared to the diesel engines.”
