Team Halfords: Team Halfords win at Rockingham

Team Halfords has secured its first win of the 2008 HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship season after Gordon 'Flash' Shedden drove a sterling lights to flag race and mastered tricky conditions at the Rockingham circuit in Northamptonshire.

On the weekend when the BTCC paddock remembered Richard Lloyd and David Leslie, Shedden secured a win that he was able to dedicate to his fellow Scot, while his team-mate Tom 'Sonic' Chilton secured his first podium finish for the team in the final race of the weekend.

Flash has now moved up to third in the championship standings with Sonic improving to eighth, while Team Halfords scored solid points over the weekend to move to second in the teams' championship.

Race one:

After a stunning qualifying performance put Gordon on pole position, he controlled the first race from the front after a fantastic getaway when the lights went out. Despite pressure from the fast diesel-powered SEAT of Darren Turner on the high-speed oval banking, Gordon drove a great race to stay ahead of the Leon, overcoming a late race rain shower which made for treacherous driving conditions to secure the first win of the year for Team Halfords.

Team-mate Tom started the race from eighth on the grid and finished in the same position after a yo-yo race that saw him in the thick of the action with the second SEAT of Jason Plato and the Vauxhall of Tom Onslow-Cole.

Race two:

Starting from pole again, Gordon lost out at the start of the second race due to the added success ballast. As the field dropped down off the banking at turn two onto the in-field Flash slipped to third place. After a Safety Car period, Flash lost third place to eventual race winner Mat Jackson but then pushed Turner hard all the way to the flag en-route to a well deserved fourth place.

Tom enjoyed another solid finish inside the top ten having spent much of the race battling for position with Stephen Jelley and former team-mate Matt Neal. When the pair made contact, Sonic was able to make up a position and he eventually took the flag in seventh place, giving him a place on the front row for race three after the reverse grid was drawn in his favour .

Race three:

The final race, held in torrential conditions after a heavy down pour hit the track, saw Gordon start from fifth on the grid, He drove a superb race, taking the flag in fourth despite the Scot being forced to deal with low visibility when his car misted up.

Tom made an excellent start from second and made the most of a mid-race Safety Car to launch a bid for the lead against Colin Turkington. Tom took the lead with a fantastic late braking move at Deene on lap 14 only to then run wide as he struggled for visibility and slipped back to fourth. However, Tom wasn't going to give up and kept his foot firmly planted and fought his way back through the pack and battled ahead of Adam Jones and Turkington to secure second place behind the rain master and eventual race winner Matt Neal.

Driver quotes:

Gordon Shedden:

"To stick it on pole was a bonus as I was about a second quicker than on the media day. To win race one under the circumstances was really special, and I want to dedicate that win to David Leslie. Two fourth places finishes after that are results I'm delighted with, especially with the ballast onboard in race two and the fact I couldn't see anything in race three because my car steamed up. I'm delighted to bring it home in one piece and to get some solid points. I've won at Donington Park for the last two years, so it is a happy hunting ground for me and here's hoping I can add to it next time out."

Tom Chilton:

"What a weekend! It's been dramatic with the conditions and I seemed to have a dry set-up when I needed a wet one, and a wet set-up when I needed a dry one. In the last race it went perfectly for me as I had a set-up that was in favour of the wet and it rained. Everyone is so close on the times that it was hard to make up places in the first two races so I finished where I started. Its all about qualifying and it didn't quite go right this weekend but roll on Donington as the guys keep telling me that it should be one of our strongest circuits."
